Omega Speedmaster Ultraman 311.12.42.30.01.001 Strap Guide – Best Rubber Straps & Fit

Omega Speedmaster Ultraman 311.12.42.30.01.001 Strap Guide – Best Rubber Straps & Fit - Helvetus

Omega put a strap-changing tool in the box with this watch. It also put a UV light in that tool — because shining it at the subdial at 9 o'clock is how you reveal the hidden Ultraman face.

So the tool is not an afterthought here. It is part of the watch, and it tells you plainly that the strap was always meant to come off.

The only question is what replaces it, and on this reference that comes down to one colour.

The fit: 20mm, nothing to select

Your Ultraman is the 42mm Speedmaster case with the lyre lugs, so the lug width is 20mm — the same as every other Moonwatch.

Every strap in our Speedmaster collection is cut to 20mm, so there is no width dropdown to get wrong. The only decision is buckle colour, and silver is the answer on a polished-and-brushed steel case.

Spring bars are included. You already own a strap tool, of course — but if you would rather keep the one with the UV light unused and boxed with the rest of the set, the Omega strap installation tool does the same job.

What you own

A 2018 "Speedy Tuesday" limited edition of 2,012 pieces — the number chosen for 2012, the year the #SpeedyTuesday hashtag started.

A 42mm steel three-body case with lyre lugs, around 14mm thick, water resistant to 50 metres, under a hesalite crystal. Inside is the calibre 1861, manual wind, roughly 48 hours. The caseback is solid, stamped with the Seahorse medallion and engraved with #SPEEDYTUESDAY and the NASA flight-qualification wording.

The dial is black anodised aluminium with a vintage Omega logo and a white minute and fraction-of-a-second scale around the edge. The bezel is black aluminium with "tachymetre" printed in orange.

Then the details that make it what it is. The subdial at 3 shows its first three minutes in orange — the length of time Ultraman could stay in superhero mode. The subdial hand at 9 is shaped like Ultraman's beta capsule, and under UV light that subdial reveals his face. It arrived on a black and orange NATO, with a spare black leather strap, the UV tool, and a hexagonal box modelled on the Monster Attack Team's table.

The orange is not a styling choice

This matters more than it sounds, and it is why the pick order below is not up for debate.

The 2018 Ultraman is a tribute to a 1968 Speedmaster, reference ST 145.012, that the props department of Return of Ultraman chose for the Monster Attack Team — because its orange chronograph hand matched their uniforms. Omega recreated that hand for this watch in the same dimensions and the same shade of orange.

So the orange on your dial is not a designer's accent. It is a reproduction of a specific colour from a specific 1968 watch, and Omega used it in four separate places: the word on the bezel, the dots on the minute track, the first three minutes at 3 o'clock, and the chronograph hand itself.

Any strap decision here is really a decision about how you treat that colour.

Four that work

1. Orange — the whole point of the watch

There is no serious argument for anything else in first place. Your watch has one colour and it is the reason the watch exists; an orange strap simply extends it from the dial down onto the wrist.

The effect is more coherent than it sounds. On the factory NATO the orange is a stripe among others; on a solid orange strap the black dial, the black bezel and the orange hand all read as one deliberate two-tone object. This is also the only Omega we make an orange strap for where orange is the subject rather than an accent. Orange rubber strap →

2. Black — let the orange be the only orange

The opposite discipline, and equally defensible. Put the watch on plain black and every orange element on it becomes the sole point of colour in the entire picture — the hand, the three minutes, the word on the bezel.

If you find the orange strap makes the watch shout, this makes it whisper and say exactly the same thing. It is also the strap you will actually wear to work. Black rubber strap →

3. Black with a white line — answer the other scale

The overlooked detail on this dial is the white minute and fraction-of-a-second track running around the edge. It is the only element that is neither black nor orange, and it is what keeps the dial legible.

A black strap with a fine white line picks that up: it stays out of the orange's way entirely while adding a crisp line that echoes the outer track. The most technical-looking of the four. Black w/White Line LuxLine® →

4. Beige — lean into the hesalite

Your watch has an acrylic crystal, a vintage Omega logo and a design lifted from 1968. Beige is the strap that agrees with all three: warm, soft, and closer to the colour of aged lume than anything else in the range.

It is the least obvious choice here and the one that makes the Ultraman look like the vintage reissue it actually is, rather than a limited edition. Best with the chronograph stopped and the orange hand parked at twelve. Beige rubber strap →
